Fonds Podiumkunsten: 'These performing artists go to Rio 2016'

Sjaron Minailo (theater), Fernando Belfiore (dance) and Emma Rekers (music) are the three performing artists whom, on behalf of Netherlands / Fonds Podiumkunsten participate in the Olympic cultural program in Rio de Janeiro. They were selected by the Brazilian program team from nine nominees.

The other public cultural funds almost round of their selection for the seven other disciplines. In mid-May the entire selection of 10 artists must be known. Minailo, Belfiore and Rekers traveling together with their colleagues to Rio de Janeiro. There they work from July 1st until 31st, together with Brazilian partners to whom they are linked in this project. In pairs they make new work presented several times during the project. On the final day of the project, a large-scale presentation is organized.

Performers could sign up in March after an open call from our colleagues of Dutch Performing Arts. A three-member jury consisting of Ruth Mackenzie (Holland Festival director), Simon van den Berg (chief editor of Theatermaker) and Yassine Boussaid (art and culture consultant ACLI) nominated nine candidates from all applications. The Brazilian program team then made the final selection.

Fernando Belfiore (dance)
Fernando Belfiore is one of the resident choreographers at Dansmakers Amsterdam. After studying theater in São Paulo, he came to the Netherlands, where he graduated from the Amsterdam School for New Dance Development (SNDO). He performed in projects by Deborah Hay, Ann Liv Young and Vincent Riebeek, amongst others. In his work as a choreographer, he combines dance with theater and visual arts. His graduation project The Miserable Thing was nominated for the ITS Festival Choreography Award and received in Spain the prize for 'Best Directoin' at the ACT Festival 2012.
