Choreographer Mouna Laroussi embodies her bi-cultural Moroccan Dutch roots in renewing crossover dance styles. The work of Laroussi is characterized by her raw, muscular choreographies with a touch of humor. As a young choreographer and theater maker she looks across borders and she inspires by revealing cultural differences and similarities in her work.
Laroussi began her career as a dancer, choreographer and artistic director of well known artists. Once she got into making her own productions, Mouna started with a research project at Dansmakers Amsterdam in 2008. She did this in collaboration with Marie-Rose Mayele, which resulted in the multicultural youth dance performance ‘Valse Noten’.
The next production Laroussi created, in collaboration with Kathrin Gramelsberger, is the youth dance performance 'Chamaeleon'. Both performances have played in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany.
The docu-dance performance ‘Sneak Preview’ premièred in 2012 at Paradiso Amsterdam. ‘Sneak Preview’ is an international performance in which the fully veiled women from Morocco and the Netherlands play a central part.
This year Laroussi works on a new dance research 'Haschoema’. ‘The social control within the Arab community and the impact on women’ are central in this new research.
In addition to her own productions Laroussi also participated in four productions of Danstheater Aya: Bronstsluier, Ziel, Ideals and Venus
With Dansmakers since: 2010
